Gerayo Amahoro goes to Rwanda Correctional Service

The ongoing Gerayo Amahoro road safety awareness campaign was on Tuesday, June 13, extended to Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS).

Rwanda National Police (RNP) spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera reminded the prison wardens to be vigilant and to respect traffic rules and regulations.

They were explained on the state of road security in Rwanda and globally as well as reckless human behaviours that contribute to road carnage.

More than 6500 people died in road accidents in Rwanda, last year, and some 4000 others were injured.

Road crashes are the leading cause of death among children and young adults aged between 5 and 29 years, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO suggests that more than 1.35 million people die in road crashes globally, every year.

CP Kabera asked the prison wardens to refrain from any behaviors that can result into an accident such as speeding, using a phone when driving, reckless turn and careless use of lanes, among other practices.

They were given safety tips for pedestrians and urged to make road safety a culture.

Superintendent of Prison (SP) Daniel Kabanguka Rafiki, the RCS spokesperson, said that Gerayo Amahoro awareness is crucial for every Rwandan to use the road safely as a choice and culture.

"We received road safety messages very well because we use the road every day. We have learnt a lot that reminds us of our responsibility in using the road properly without disturbing the traffic flow or causing accidents. It is also our responsibility that we extend Gerayo Amahoro campaign to all RCS employees and other people in our families and communities," SP Rafiki said.
