On Saturday, December 6, 185 Rwandan Police peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were awarded UN service medals in recognition of their professionalism, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting civilians.
The honorees include 160 officers from the female-dominated Rwandan Formed Police Unit Three (RWAFPU 3) operating in the capital Juba, and 25 Individual Police Officers (IPOs) who serve as Police advisors.
While presiding over the medal pinning ceremony, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Mussa Gasama, applauded the Rwandan peacekeepers for the exceptional discipline, resilience, and work ethic.
“The dedication of RWAFPU 3 has been critical to implementing the UNMISS mandate, particularly in protecting civilians,” Mr. Gasama said. “You have worked tirelessly—day and night—to conduct patrols, joint operations, rapid response duties, and visibility patrols in IDP camps, significantly enhancing law and order and building trust with communities.”

He highlighted their strong adherence to UN values and thanked Rwanda for deploying a women-dominated force.
“Your presence has inspired women in the IDP camps, giving them confidence to engage freely. This reflects the government of Rwanda’s commitment to gender equality and meaningfully advancing the women, peace, and security agenda,” he added.
The SRSG also recognized the contingent’s support to the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) through training, mentorship, and sustained community engagement.
“You have demonstrated the highest level of integrity and professionalism. These medals are a true recognition of your hard work and commitment to peace. You have been exemplary ambassadors of your country—a nation of a thousand hills and resilient people.”
