[PHOTOS]: RNP showcases new computer-based drivers testing centres

Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Friday, showcased its new computer-based drivers testing centres, which it established to further easy the process of acquiring a driver’s license.

The force established 18 centres across the country with the capacity of 2980 people per day seeking provisional driver’s license.

RNP spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera, said that the centres reinforce the usual system, further improves service delivery in traffic related services especially facilitating aspiring drivers, doing away with long queues, transparency and toughens measures against corruption.

How the centres work

An aspiring driver goes through the usual process of online registration, either by SMS or through Irembo platform, and follow the prompt.

RNP spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera.

You choose the preferred language (Kinyarwanda, English or French), district, date and time of doing the test.

At the centre, candidates are required to come with their Identity Card, which is scanned at the accreditation and orientation room to authenticate your particulars and given a ticket indicating the computer number one is supposed to use.

The accreditation and orientation room is installed with television screens where candidates are acquainted with the steps to follow when on a computer doing the test.

Literally, it’s you against the computer, which generates 20 questions randomly supposed to be answered within 20 minutes. After answering the questions, you submit and automatically you receive results indicating what you either got right or wrong; the correct answers for the failed questions and whether you passed or failed. The pass-mark is 12 out of 20.

The system shuts down automatically when 20 minutes elapses, but it will still show you if you passed or failed as per the questioned you answered.

For those who pass, they immediately go ahead to process their provisional license and those that failed will go through the same registration and accreditation process.

Where centres are established

CITY OF KIGALI: Muhima

EASTERN PROVINCE: Rwamagana, Kayonza, Nyagatare, Kirehe and Bugesera

WESTERN PROVINCE: Nyamasheke, Karongi, Rutsiro, Ngororero and Rubavu

SOUTHERN PROVINCE: Muhanga, Ruhango, Huye, Gisagara and Nyaruguru

NORTHERN PROVINCE: Musanze and Gicumbi

According to CP Kabera, more centres will be opened in different parts of the country.

“First, we need the general public to know that these services exist near them, this helps them to choose the centre of their choice when registering to do provisional test,” CP Kabera said.

“We have seen people being defrauded or taking the criminal shortcuts of attempting to give bribes in this process of acquiring a driver’s license. RNP continues to ease access to its services and urge the public to utilise these facilities rather than taking illegal directions,” he added.

He further disclosed that in light of the current practice of quarterly tests done on papers in stadiums and other open places, RNP is also establishing centres in different parts of the country which will conduct tests done on papers on daily basis.
