Police Volleyball Club wins Rutsindura Memorial Tournament

Police Volleyball Club won the 19th edition of Rutsindura Memorial Tournament on Sunday, June 11, to bag their first silverware after beating holders Gisagara VC three straight sets in the finals.

The annual tournament hosted by Petit Séminaire Virgo Fidelis de Karubanda in Huye District, is held in the memory of the former national volleyball team player and coach, Alphonse Rutsindura, who was killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Rutsindura was also  first Vice President of Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB).

Seven men's teams participated in this year's two-day tournament. Others are APR VC, REG VC, UR Nyarugenge, UR CAVM and Rukinzo VC from Burundi.

Police and Gisagara had met in group stages and the former came out victorious by 3-1 sets.

The law enforcers beat APR VC three straight sets to sail through to the finals.

Police VC coach,  Dr. Sylvestre Mbanza believes that the triumph puts the newest volleyball club in better competitive position.

"We are happy for winning our first trophy. At the moment, Police VC is third in the national volleyball championship and we are currently preparing for the Genocide Memorial tournament to be played late this month, and our focus is the same--to win trophies," Mbanza said.
