Police Handball Club wins Genocide Memorial Cup

Police Handball Club was on Sunday, June 4, crowned the 2023 Genocide Memorial cup champions for the sixth time after a hard-fought 41-39 win over Gicumbi in the finals played at Kigali Pele stadium.

The law enforcers booked their ticket into the finals after eliminating UR Rukara 40-20 in the semifinals.

Eight teams pooled in two groups, participated in this year's Genocide Memorial tournament.

Group A included Police, UR Huye, Nyakabanda and APR while Group B featured Uganda's Makerere University, Gicumbi, UR Rukara and ES Kigoma.

Police and APR faced UR Rukara and Gicumbi, respectively, in the build-up to the finals. Gicumbi Handball Club came into the tournament as defending champions.

It was a Sunday afternoon tight finals as the two sides went into the break tied at 20 goals, only to be separated by two goals at the end of the final whistle--21-19--in the second period.

The finals between Police and Gicumbi was a repeat of last year, when the latter won the cup.

Police's duo; Corporal Gaston Kanyandekwe and Jackson Uwimana was named the Most Valuable Player and Best Goalkeeper of the tournament, respectively.
