PEACEKEEPING: Rwandan police officers return home after successful UN mission in Central African Republic

A contingent of 140 Rwandan police officers returned home on Tuesday, June 10, after completing a one-year peacekeeping mission under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

The officers, part of Rwanda Protection Support Unit One—ninth rotation (RWAPSU1-9), were welcomed at Kigali International Airport by Commissioner of Police (CP) Yahya Kamunuga, Commissioner for Peace Support Operations, on behalf of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) leadership. The returning contingent under the command of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ildephonse Rutagambwa was replaced by RWAPSU1-10, which departed earlier the same day under the command of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) James Karasi.

The PSU is primarily responsible for providing protection to high-profile national and international officials, including the Prime Minister, the President of the National Assembly, senior judicial leaders, and the head of the MINUSCA Police Component.
CP Kamunuga commended the officers for a successful tour-of-duty defined by their professionalism and dedication.

“The Rwanda National Police leadership welcomes you back home and appreciates the dedication, resilience, and professional conduct you demonstrated during your mission. This spirit enables our institution and the country to continuously uphold its mandate at home and abroad. The duty continues back home,” said CP Kamunuga.

Reflecting on their mission, CSP Rutangambwa emphasized the value of teamwork and community engagement in their peacekeeping efforts.

“Our success was rooted in our unity and shared commitment to serve. In addition to our core security responsibilities, we actively participated in community development initiatives such as communal work (Umuganda), environmental protection, blood donation, water supply, and the provision of medical care in collaboration with local security forces. These efforts played a vital role in building trust and fostering a strong partnership with the local communities,” CSP Rutangambwa stated.
