Leadership and management key to achieve Rwanda National Police mandate

Leadership and management are pivotal to Rwanda National Police (RNP) to achieve its mandate and mission, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, said.

She was speaking on Friday , February 9, at the closing of the five-day 'Senior Leadership and Management' for commissioners and senior police officers held at the RNP General Headquarters in Kacyiru.

While thanking the Commonwealth Secretariat for supporting the force in its capacity development, DIGP Ujeneza said that when leaders and managers understand their functions and have the required skills, it drives their performance to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives.

The five-day session discussed key topics related to best leadership styles, strategic planning and management, ethics versus integrity in an organisation, management functions, roles and skills; conflict and related management, team building, among others.

"What you have benefited from this training should go a long way to your respective departments' objectives and the RNP in general," DIGP Ujeneza said.

Dr. Roger Koranteng, the Adviser and Head of Public Sector Governance at the Commonwealth Secretariat, who facilitated the training, said that high intelligence, social skills, and emotional intelligence and adversity quotient are key aspects of leadership.

"An effective leader must adapt and endure in the face of challenges," Dr. Koranteng said.

He noted the prevalence of corruption worldwide and called for strong measures and leadership to combat the vice.
