KIGALI: RNP trains Nyarurama Adventist Polyclinic staff on fire safety

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) Fire and Rescue Brigade (FRB) awareness and training on fire safety continued this Friday, January 21, at Nyarurama Adventist Polyclinic in Kigarama Sector, Kicukiro District where they equipped about 30 staff with basic skills and knowledge to prevent fire outbreak and safer ways to respond to fire emergencies.

Participants in the training included medical workers, administrators, cleaners and security guards.

The practical-based training looks mainly on fire chemistry and components, evacuation procedures along with prevention and fighting techniques using varied firefighting gadgets and sand.

Jean Francois Regis Habimana, the Manager of Nyarurama Adventist Polyclinic said that such skills and knowledge are beneficial to ensure security of their facilities as well as their homes against fire.

"We have portable firefighting equipment like fire extinguishers but most of us did not know how to use them, save for few specific people. These practical lessons have helped us to get more knowledge and skills to use them in emergency times but most importantly to know how to prevent such disasters," Habimana said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Paul Gatambira, the Commanding officer for Fire and Rescue Brigade (FRB) said that the awareness and practical training will continue to personnel in other institutions.

So, far, a number of health facilities have benefited from this training, including La Croix du Sud Hospital commonly known as kwa Nyiranuma, Masaka hospital, the university teaching hospitals of Kigali and Butare, Legacy Clinic and other medical schools.

The training also involves inspecting facilities and advising the management to fix the identified gaps in electric installations to prevent fire outbreak.
