Twenty-three people were arrested Friday, February 11, at about 1pm, in a bar in Kamonyi District, which was operating contrary to the national directives against the spread of Covid-19.
The bar belongs to one Gerard Ntezimana, 39, also arrested, located in Rugazi Village, Ruyenzi Cell of Runda Sector was operating without authorization.
Bars are allowed to resume operations only after meeting the required Covid-19 prevention measures and getting authorization from local authorities.
The Southern region Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Theobald Kanamugire said that the violators were arrested following a tip off by local residents.
?Police received information from local residents that the bar belonging to Ntezimana was operating with many people inside drinking and making noise in the the neighborhood. Police found people overcrowded inside drinking traditional beer. The bar had no authorization, no hand washing facilities and all the Covid-19 prevention guidelines like social distancing and wearing masks had been violated," SP Kanamugire said.
SP Kanamugire warned against such inappropriate behaviours which derail the national efforts to contain the pandemic of Covid-19.
He further commended the responsiveness of the public against violation of Covid-19 directives and other illegal acts.
The violators were taken to Runda Police station where they were educated on health measures and guidelines against Covid-19, tested for Covid-19 at their own cost and handed administrative fines, accordingly.
