Sharp serving, strong blocks power Police VC to commanding start in CAVB championship

Rwanda National Police Volleyball Club (Police VC) made an impressive start to the 47th African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Men’s Club Championship with a commanding straight-sets victory over Tanzania’s Prisons VC on Thursday, April 23, at BK Arena in Kigali.

Police VC secured a 3–0 win (25–15, 25–18, 25–17) in a match that showcased their strength and coordination. Although both teams began on relatively equal footing, the Rwandan Police side quickly asserted control, thrilling home fans with a confident and disciplined performance.

The team’s attacking power was led by the Brazilian Bettim Matheus and Etienne Ntirushwa, while Sibomana Placide and Ishimwe Patrick stood out with strong blocks and effective serves. Their combined efforts gave Police VC an early advantage, particularly in the opening set.

Prisons VC attempted to mount a comeback in the later sets, showing renewed energy and determination. However, Police VC head coach Fred Musoni made a key tactical adjustment during the second set, introducing Kenyan player Eliphase Makuto. His impact was immediate, adding offensive strength and helping the team maintain momentum through to the final whistle.

The championship, which began on April 22, brought together 24 of Africa’s top volleyball clubs, divided into four groups. Police VC competes in Group C alongside Tanzania’s Prisons VC, Faith Union (Morocco), Kenya Ports Authority, Wolaitta Volleyball (Ethiopia), and Ghana Army VC.

With this strong opening performance, Police VC has boosted its chances of advancing further in the tournament. The team will next face Morocco’s Faith Union, who also began their campaign with a 3–1 victory over Kenya Ports Authority.
