Rwanda National Police Taekwondo club clinches top honors in Genocide Memorial tournament

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) Taekwondo Club emerged the overall champions of the 13th Genocide Memorial Tournament (GMT), which concluded on Sunday, June 29, at Highland School in Nyamata, Bugesera District.

Throughout the two-day tournament, the Rwanda National Police team delivered an exceptional performance, winning seven gold and four silver medals. Their performance earned them the overall tournament trophy as the best-performing team.

The tournament was organized as part of activities to mark the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (Kwibuka31), in memory of sportsmen and women who were killed during the Genocide.

It brought together 13 teams, including two international teams from Uganda Police Force and Kenya’s Tharaka University.

The tournament began with a walk to the Nyamata Genocide Memorial, where participants paid tribute to the victims and were guided through the history of how the Genocide was planned and executed.

Dream Taekwondo Club and Dream Fighters Taekwondo Club, both from Rwanda, came second and third, respectively. Other local teams included Pioneer TKD, Bugesera TKD, IYF TKD, Best Choice Team, Kirehe Team, Wisdom TKD Team, Mount Hope TKD Team, and Unit TKD Team.

Now in its 13th edition, the Kwibuka Taekwondo Tournament continues to grow as a platform for competitive sports, remembrance, and regional solidarity, reminding participants and spectators alike of the enduring lessons of Rwanda’s history and the power of unity through sport.
