The Rwanda National Police (RNP), through its Department of Community Policing, on Saturday, July 25, engaged participants in the Career Center (K2) Summer Camp in an interactive session on community policing, responsible citizenship and the role of young people in building safer communities.
The session, held at Ntare Louisenlund School in Bugesera District, brought together youth participants and RNP officers to discuss the shared responsibility for safety and security and the importance of strong partnerships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Participants explored the values of responsible citizenship, including respect for the law, integrity, volunteerism and active participation in community development.
The Commissioner for Community Policing, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Teddy Ruyenzi, emphasised the importance of engaging young people in shaping safer communities and making positive choices that safeguard their future.
"The young generation is the driving force behind our nation's future. As you pursue your dreams and explore your potential, remember that responsible citizenship, patriotism, discipline, hard work and respect for the law are values that will not only help you succeed in life but also contribute to safer communities and sustainable national development," ACP Ruyenzi said.
She further called on the students to live drug-free lives and use social media responsibly.
"Your choices today determine the future you will have tomorrow. Stay away from drugs and other harmful behaviours, use social media responsibly, and surround yourselves with people who inspire you to make positive decisions. By doing so, you will protect your future and become ambassadors of peace and safety in your communities," she added.
Steven Karangwa, Chief Executive Officer of the Career Center (K2), commended the Rwanda National Police for supporting youth development through civic education and practical engagement.
"This programme blends our cultural heritage with future-ready skills such as artificial intelligence, robotics and entrepreneurship to cultivate ethically informed, patriotic and innovative young leaders. We appreciate Rwanda National Police for contributing to this vision and inspiring our students to become responsible citizens," Karangwa said.
Before the discussion, RNP officers and camp leaders joined the youth in a community work activity (Umuganda), demonstrating the values of volunteerism and collective responsibility that underpin community policing.
Held under the theme, "Tracing Our Roots, Mapping Our Future," the 12-day residential leadership and talent development programme runs from July 20 to 31 and brings together students from Rwanda and other African countries for cultural immersion, leadership development and career exploration.
