Rwanda National Police (RNP) on September 23, extended its ongoing environmental protection campaign to Gakenke district where residents of Muhondo sector were presented with benefits of protecting the ecosystem.

The campaign is spearheaded by the RNP Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) in the CID department and was presided over by the head of customer care, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Gasana.
“If we are to mitigate effects of climate change, we need to come up with strategies of protecting our environment jointly; we can only achieve that by collectively planting trees, creating terraces and even jealously protecting what is there like forests,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Gasana told residents.
"Effects of climate change may be instant while others may be long term. Everything we do in line with environmental protection is for us all now and for future generations.”
Gasana further told Muhondo residents that besides environmental protection, they should take part in crime prevention especially by timely reporting offenders and unlawful activities, to police.
Ruhondo sector agronomist, Emmanuel Hitayezu, who represent the Executive Secretary, also encouraged residents to work closely with the police especially in fighting drug abuse and gender based violence.
“Today we have a police station in all sectors across the country, meaning we have the ability to work with the police and eliminate these crimes in our communities,” said Hitayezu.
During the meeting that drew over 200 residents, people filed their concerns through the mobile station van that was stationed in the area. 14 cases of injustice were filed.
