A Danny Usengimana first half goal was enough for Police football club to register a 1-0 win in their Christmas Cup opening match against Mukura played at Mumena stadium on November 25.

Usengimana made no mistake in the 22rd minute when defender Heritier Turatsinze cleared a long ball from the Police defence to find him as he over-powered two Mukura defenders to put the law enforcers in the lead.

Police FC secured a penalty two minutes later after a Mukura defender, Hussein Habimana was penalized for a handball but Usengimana was denied by the goalkeeper.

It was yet not meant to be him after the striker again failed to score deep in the second half with only the keeper to beat.

Police coach Andre Cassa Mbugo said that despite the slim win, the players need to refocus when they face AS Kigali in their second match of group B on Friday.

“We squandered many chances, so we need to exchange them into goals during the coming matches.

The other club in group B is Bukavu Dawa from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which lost 0-5 to AS Kigali in their opening match on Wednesday.

Meanwhile Police midfielder Muhamed Mushimiyimana was awarded as man of the match.

The tournament organized by Rayon Sports Football Club and StarTimes attracted eight teams with group A composed of Rayon Sports, SC Kiyovu, Gicumbi FC and SC Villa (Uganda).

The final will be played on December 4.
