Fifteen students from the University of Zambia-Zimbabwe Open University, on Wednesday, visited Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District as part of their study tour in Rwanda

Led by the Deputy Director for Institute of Distance Education at the University of Zambia, Dr. Daniel Ndhlovu, the delegation was received by the commandant of PTS, Commissioner of Police (CP) Vianney Nshimiyimana.

The commandant briefed them on the history of the school and its journey since the year 2000, when it was transformed into PTS from communal Police training school.

He took them through the school training structures and the courses it offers.

Police Training School is composed of four wings; cadet and recruit wing, Peace Support Operations (PSO) wing, Specialized and Career Course wing and Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre (IPRC).

The students are in Rwanda to learn on the country’s history and her independence struggle in particular, the country’s foreign and economic policy and the peacekeeping efforts, among others.

The PSO wing, CP Nshimiyimana said, it trains and prepare Police officers prior to their deployment, develop their skills and competencies in line with the UN standards in regard to escort and protection of dignitaries, facilities, public order management, protection of civilians and other special duties.

So far, 29 Formed Police Units (FPU) contingents have been trained as well as 4 FPU Training of Trainers (ToT) courses and 8 UN Police Officers Courses (UNPOC).

Rufus Mkandawire, the Guild President, who was part of the study tour, said that they came to “learn on Rwanda’s development agenda”

“We wanted to learn strategies that have led to the country’s progress in the shortest period… it’s a success story worth learning for a country that went through the catastrophic period of genocide,” Mkandawire said.
