Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in Musanze and Gasabo districts have been reminded that the proactive factor of partnership in policing, which they equally stand for, is a guarantee to sustainable peace, safety, security and development.
The call was made in separate meetings held on July 18, and attended by heads and representatives of the youth volunteer organization.
In Musanze, the acting District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kabandana noted that the “country has come this far” from the ashes of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi due to good governance is all aspects of development.
He appealed to the youth to be defined by self-determination and practical partnership in the policing and the general transformation process.
“The future of our country in is the hands of the youth – you are the generation that will further determine the kind of life other generations will live, and this tasks you to ensure that the country is safe and secure for all,” CIP Kabandana told the youth.
The coordinator of RYVCP in Musanze, Theodore Murangamirwa said the meeting was one of the series that are aimed at removing members their responsibilities towards crime prevention.
In the City of Kigali, the District Community Liaison Officer of Gasabo, Inspector of Police (IP) Theogene Mugabo spoke at length about the community policing concept, and their individual role in contributing to national security.
“Youth constitute the biggest number of the population, and are mostly the ones who get involved in various crimes. You, the representatives, are in good position to help your peers shun and prevent crimes. You interact with most of those in your age brackets, so you have to positively change them,” said IP Mugabo.
He went on to remind them that modern-day policing requires strong partnership, as well as mutual trust between law enforcers and residents, which are a necessity in building a longstanding foundation for sustainable security.
“The involvement of citizens in crime prevention is essential to ensuring that our communities are healthy and vibrant in all aspects of development. Each individual’s commitment to participate in an organized community policing initiative does indeed make an impact…we therefore encourage you to take a lead in this course,” he said.
