'Youth Volunteers' undergo crime prevention training

About 300 members of the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Crime Prevention Organisation (RYVCPO), on December 21, started a nine-day training workshop on how to combat crimes, at the National Police College in Musanze district.

This is the second batch to attain similar skills and the first one ended successfully in September.

The training organised by Rwanda National Police is held under the theme “together in crime prevention.”

While officiating at the start of the course, General Emmanuel Bayingana, the Vice chairman National Itorero Commission noted that it should be an obligation for every youth to protect the values of their nation including fighting whatever that can destabilise the peace and safety Rwandans are currently enjoying.

"We should shift from dealing with the consequences to preventing crimes, and this is possible if all Rwandans especially you, the youth stand up against anything that might affect the well-being of Rwandans in your communities through awareness campaigns and providing timely information on security challenges faced," Brig Gen. Bayingana said.

"Your target now as responsible Rwandans, should be preventing crime before they occur by walking the talk; let action speak more than words and be more focused and result-oriented," he added.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Damas Gatare, Commissioner for Community Policing observed that the youth are major partners in combating crimes.

He urged them to own the awareness against criminal acts including drugs and human trafficking, which he said can override personal safety and development.

"Most crimes are committed in communities especially by the youth, so we need to work together to teach the young generation on the consequences of what they do and show them a better way so that they can also join in ensuring sustainable security and consequently development," ACP Gatare said.

Mutangana Jean Bosco, the coordinator of RYVCPO said the the organisation strives to ensure that the young generation become patriotic citizens and leads to right path, and follows in the footsteps of the elders.

“I am therefore calling upon our fellow youth to be part of national development and to protect what has been achieved”Mutangana said

During the course of the training, the youth will cover lessons like Information Sharing System, anti-drugs and gender based violence, road accidents prevention, Saving, innovation, customer care and the role of youth in enhancing and consolidating “Ndi Umunyarwanda program” and fighting genocide ideology.

The organization is composed of about 7, 000 members countrywide including students, who supports vulnerable communities by giving them medical insurance, livestock and carryout crime prevention awareness programmes in schools and communities against drug abuse, corruption and gender and domestic violence, among others.
