Youth volunteers in road safety campaign

Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing  (RYVCP) have joined Rwanda National Police (RNP) in efforts to educate the public on traffic rules and regulations.

The initiative is part of the on-going 52 week-long road safety campaign dubbed ‘Gerayo Amahoro,’ a government effort to eliminate fatalities on roads.

In the City of Kigali, the youngsters joined the Police to sensitize students of St Michel EPA located in Kiyovu, on road safety standards.

Speaking during the campaign, Naila Uwera, one of the youth volunteers, reminded students against careless crossing of road.

She told them that right of way doesn't guarantee safety.

“Some motorists make bad decisions on roads without regarding other road users which have fatal endings,” Uwera told students.

The students were also given a demonstration on proper road crossing.

Smilar public education were also extended to students of Kibari Technical and Vocational School (TVET) and other schools in Gicumbi District, where students were urged  to be ambassadors of road safety.

Police spokesperson for the Northern region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alex Rugigana said that in all the schools youth volunteers visited, road safety ’clubs’ where formed.

“We are working to familiarize the students with the importance of road safety, and working with young adults will cement the understanding that human lives have to be valued,” said CIP Rugigana.

He said the campaign has been also extended to local communities where the youth and police address community meeting on matters of road safety.
