Youth volunteers in mass campaign against illicit drugs

Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) continued the campaign against narcotic drugs over the weekend to reinforce national efforts against the vice.

The nationwide campaign launched last week in the City of Kigali was on Saturday extended to the Eastern Province, particularly in the districts of Kirehe, Nyagatare and Kayonza as they engaged fellow young generation

In Nyagatare, the awareness was characterized by a walk against drugs that brought together about 600 students of Nyagatare Secondary School and Bright Academy.

Nyagatare is mapped as one of the districts in the Eastern Province used as the transit route especially for illicit gin.

Contrabands including 892 boxes of Zebra Gin, 77 liters of Kanyanga, 45 boxes of Zebra Waragi among others, seized in various Police operations were disposed of as part of the campaign.

The District Police Commander for Nyagatare, Senior Supt. Peter Tebuka, while addressing the youth, commended them for their “practical effort” to support Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other institutions in addressing the problem.

“Substances such cannabis and illicit gins like these we have disposed of are dangerous to users. Some of your agemate have ended upon abandoning school because of drugs and majority are undergoing rehabilitation programmes; you don’t want to be in the same situation,” SSP Tebuka told the youth.

“You equally have a duty to fight this scourge by refraining from abusing these substances but also reporting dealers,” he added.

The vice Mayor of Nyagatare in charge of Social Affairs, Juliet Murekatete said that the district has organized a football tournament through which they will continue to deliver the message and educate the young people on dangers of drugs.

Similar messages were also extended to the youth in Kirehe and Kayonza where members of RYVCP were joined by the Police and local leaders to sensitize the youth on ill-effects of abusing drugs.
