Youth volunteers in community policing facelift Genocide memorial sites

Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Police (RYVCP) countrywide, on March 24, conducted special communal work—Umuganda—which was characterized by cleaning of Genocide memorial sites and rehabilitating houses for the disadvantaged survivors.

The special Umuganda was set aside by the youth organization to support the government human security and development programmes, and supplements the usual national Umuganda conducted every last Saturday of the month.

In Ngororero District, about 1,200 youngsters participated in activity where they were joined by residents and local government leaders from the district.

The Mayor of Ngororero, Godefroid Ndayambaje lauded the continued initiative by the youth and appealed other youngsters to emulate and sustain the patriotic spirit of youth volunteers

In Ngoma District, RYVCP cleaned genocide memorial sites, constructed five latrines for vulnerable families in Kibungo, Zaza, Mutenderi and Rukumberi, and helped the same families to plant banana suckers.

A similar exercise was conducted in Rusiszi District, Ngarama sector where the youth laid over 500 bricks and constructed a latrine for one disadvantaged family.

Meanwhile, the executive secretary of the National Youth Council, Robert Mwesige flanked by Supt. Alex Ntaburane, the District Police Commander of Bugesera led the youth in Gashora Sector in an exercise to rehabilitate Biryogo memorial site where about 5140 remains of genocide victims were laid to rest.

Mwesigye appealed to the youth to remain committed to personal and national development agenda and avoid anything that will sway them away from being actively part of the national transformational agenda of the country.

In a related development, the youth held a similar activity in Karongi in all the 13 sectors of the district.

In Rusizi, Senator Perrin Mukankusi lauded the youth for the humane activity and called all people to bear the greatness of good by way of supporting vulnerable communities.

During such Umuganda, the youth carryout human security activities by mainly supporting vulnerable groups like constructing and renovating houses, environmental protection.

The youth volunteers’ organization which has about 260, 000 countrywide, was formed in 2013 with less than 300 members. It is composed of students and graduates, with leadership structures from the national level down the village levels.
