The youth have been called upon to spearhead the fight against crimes especially human trafficking, drug abuse and gender-based violence.
Inspector of Police (IP) Robert Komire, while speaking to about 3000 youths at Gatenga Youth Centre in Kicukiro district on September 27, observed that though human trafficking is not a common phenomenon in Rwanda, there is need to be cautious especially that majority targeted are the youth.
He introduced them to the concept of community policing and urged them to work with security organs and report anyone that tries to seduce them with “empty promises” of better offers abroad.
He further observed that the youth are the majority involved in drug-related crimes.
“Drug abuse leads to school drop-outs, unwanted pregnancies, prostitution and also lures one into gender-based related crimes like defilement and rape, assault and theft” IP Komire said.
Yousouf Niyigena, one of the participants thanked RNP for involving the youth in crime prevention and advised colleagues to abstain from use of drugs.
