On Friday passengers were left dazed and confused after a driver of the vehicle they were traveling in discovered that a woman who was among the passengers was trafficking contrabands.
The woman, Aline Uwimbabazi, was carrying a six month old baby and had strapped the drugs around the baby on her back.
Uwimbabazi tried to conceal 120 sachets of Zebra Waragi, an illegal gin that is commonly packed in plastic bags.
The driver of the vehicle that was from Nyagatare to Kigali noticed something strange about the way Uwimbabazi had strapped the baby and immediately notified police.
The Eastern Province Police Spokesperson Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire commended the vigilance of the driver in reporting the suspicious behavior.
“He saw how the woman had strapped the baby and got suspicious,” CIP Kanamugire said.
“More women are trafficking drugs while guising as mothers carrying a baby. I think this why he became suspicious,” he added.
The driver stopped at a roadblock in Kabarore, Gatsibo District as per the communication with the police when he reported the incident.
When the police searched Uwimbabazi they found the concealed drugs just as their tipoff had suspected. Uwimbabazi was immediately arrested.
Police has been working with ordinary people through the community policing philosophy to identify and report offenders.
This has helped to fight drug trafficking and “more difficult for one to conceal and traffic contraband,” the spokesperson said, while emphasizing the importance of this partnership with the community, especially how ordinary people are taking charge of their own safety and security.
