After a long period of staying silent, a woman in Mukura Sector, Huye District decided to alert Police about the illegal activities conducted by her husband, which included the distillation of dangerous brew which he sold to unsuspecting clients.
Police reacted to the information immediately and searched the man’s house and discovered distillation equipment and over 500 liters of a banned brew locally known as Ibikwangari.
The Southern Region Police Commander, Chief Supt. Simon Mukama, said that the brew was immediately destroyed in public and the equipment confiscated in order to discourage the production of such dangerous products.
“The woman acted responsibly by alerting Police. She had advised her husband to stop the production and sell of this dangerous brew but he did not listen to her, so she decided to report to Police. This is a sign of responsible citizenship, which upholds the values of community policing,” he said.
“Such products are deadly to consumers and also lead to drunkenness which fuels criminal activities such as violence, burglary and gender based violence. We should all work together to overcome them and protect our communities from those who distribute them.”
CSP Mukama also reminded residents to watch out against the smuggling of drugs and illicit alcohols and report to Police whenever they suspect individuals or gangs to be conducting such criminal activities in their neighbourhoods.
He also pledged quick response from Police whenever timely information is availed, in order to promote safety, security and the rule of law.
