Woman drug dealer arrested in Bugesera

Police in Bugesera District, on Wednesday, arrested a woman in connection with trafficking and selling narcotic drugs.

The 32-year old Leatitia Nishimwe was arrested in Ruhuha Sector, Ruhuha village where she was delivering a consignment of cannabis, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson of Eastern region, said.

“Local leaders and residents had shared information about Nishimwe’s criminal dealings in narcotics,” CIP Twizeyimana said.

“When Police officers responded to the information on Wednesday, they arrested Nishimwe red-handed with 413 pellets of cannabis, which she was at the time delivering to one of her customers identified as Samuel Nsabimana, who managed to escape the arrest,” he explained.

At the time of her arrest, the suspect had already sold other quantities of cannabis for Rwf487, 000, which she was caught with.

Information indicates that this is the third time Nishimwe has trafficked cannabis from Kigali to Bugesera, where she supplies different retailers, including Nsabimana.

CIP Twizeyimana commended the role of the public in fighting drug related crimes, including identifying dealers and breaking chains of supply.

Article 263 of the new penal code states that, any person who, unlawfully produces, transforms, transports, stores, gives to another or who sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances commits an offence, with a sentence ranging from seven years to life in prison, upon conviction, and a fine of between Rwf20 million and Rwf30 million.
