Western Province launch Gerayo Amahoro campaign in communities

The year-long road safety campaign dubbed 'Gerayo Amahoro' was on Tuesday launched in all the cells of the Western Province.

The campaign in communities is part of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Ministry of Local Government to make road safety part of the community meetings locally known as Inteko z’Abaturage, to prevent fatalities on road caused by human behaviours.

In Rubavu, the district mayor Gilbert Habyalimana, while addressing residents in Nyakabungo Cell, Gisenyi Sector, reminded them not to use the road recklessly.

“You should be careful when walking or crossing the road. Safety on road starts on a personal level," mayor Habyalimana said.

He noted that although to a larger extent motorists are the majority violating traffic rules, some pedestrians use the road recklessly where some of them are killed by vehicles.

"You have to remember that more victims of road accidents are pedestrians, so make sure when crossing the road observe both sides, walk on the left side of the road and avoid using a phone when crossing because they also distruct," the mayor told the residents.

He also urged them to actively participate in community development and security activities.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Police spokesperson for the Western region told the residents that community awareness is aimed at reaching out to all people in the country.

“We can’t remain in towns only; we want people to understand the main cause of accidents which is human behavior. We want people to change their attitudes so as to prevent accidents,” he said.
