Last week was another period that witnessed several activities and anti-crime operations conducted by Rwanda National Police (RNP) aimed at preserving safety of lives and property of people living in Rwanda. Below is the summery of the major activities conducted in the week under review.
Eighth 'Officer Cadet' intake commences at Police Training School
The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana, on May 4, officially launched the eighth cadet course intake at Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District, as Rwanda National Police (RNP) continues to build capacity of personnel to produce skilled and professional police officers.
The intake of 440 cadet recruits, involves 159 police officers, 251 civilians, 17 officers from Rwanda Correction Services, as well as 13 Allied Students from South Sudan, Uganda and Namibia.
During the year long training, trainees will undergo special drills as well as practical and theoretical lectures that will shape them into responsible and skilled officers that the force needs in pursuance of its goals and visions in maintaining law and order.
Israel's Envoy to Rwanda visit RNP
Israel's ambassador to Rwanda, Belaynesh Zevadia visited RNP Headquarters in Kacyiru on May 4, where she was received by the Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana.
Zevadia, whose office in Addis Ababa covers Burundi, Ethiopia and Rwanda, was briefed on the Rwanda National Police 14-year policing journey since it was established in the year 2000 and pledged his country's support to RNP in various policing areas including training.
RNP signs MoU with 'youth in crime prevention'
RNP and the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Crime Prevention signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize their almost three-year partnership in community awareness and fight against crimes.
The agreement was signed on May 7 between Assistant Commissioner of Police, Damas Gatare, Commissioner for Community Policing in RNP and Jean Bosco Mutangana, the coordinator of the youth organisation.
The formal agreement seeks to reinforce the current joint efforts between RNP and the organisation composed of majority students and graduates, in promoting community safety and making the idea of human security a tradition.
Under this partnership, RNP will also, capacitate them through training, equipment, and together engage in promoting law and order.
Two men arrested for impersonation
Police in Kigali arrested two men on Monday for impersonation after they were allegedly found doing provisional driver's licence tests under other people's names.
The suspects, Alex Nshimiyimana and Dieudonne Mutagisha were purportedly hired by candidates to seat for the provisional driving licence test on their behalf.
The public driving licence tests started on Monday in Kigali where over 6000 permit seekers gathered at Amahoro stadium to prove their understanding on road traffic rules and their worthiness to be permitted to take another step and acquire a driver's licence.
The duo is said to have been found holding forged national IDs containing particulars of real candidates, who were not present at the time.
Two men arrested for forging tax stamps, bribery
Two men were arrested for attempting to corrupt a police officer with a bribe worth Rwf600,000, after their goods had been seized for using fake tax stamps.
The suspects work for a local liquor-making firm, which makes gin brands – and was also being investigated for evading tax using forged tax stamps.
When Police confiscated merchandise after investigations revealed that they contained forged stamps, the suspects attempted to bribe an officer with an officer with Rwf600,000. The officer instead alerted his colleagues and the suspects were arrested.
Four men rescued from human trafficking
Four men in their early twenties were rescued from the grasp of human trafficking, when RNP foiled a plan by two suspects who intended to traffic and sell them to another human trafficker in Kenya.
Upon getting information from concerned citizens, Police investigated and found out that two suspects, Silver Nzeyimana, 27, and Marcel Usabimana, 26, were in the habit of luring young Rwandans to Kenya.
These investigations led Police to Nyabugogo bus terminal on May 7, where the two suspects were arrested in a Kenya-bound bus where the victims were also rescued.
Upon their arrest, the suspects disclosed that they were being paid by a Rwandan who lives in Kenya, to get him young people.
Woman in Ruhango arrested for robbing Rwf2 million from Mobile Money agent
Ruhango woman arrested for robbing Rwf2 million from Mobile Money agent
Police arrested Shemsa Uwimana in Ruhango District for robbing a Mobile Money agent of Rwf2 million.
The suspect was arrested on May 5 when the Mobile Money agent alerted Police about the incident, which occurred in Bweramana Sector.
The suspect is said to have used trickery to obtain the agent's password and then used it to steal the money before she was arrested.
