In the first week week of August 2015, Police conducted several notable activities that were geared towards enforcing law and order. Below, we present our readers with a summary of the major activities that transpired.
Police High Council highlights need to maintain security
The second quarter of the 2015 Rwanda National Police High Council has emphasised the need to strengthen working relations with its partners and the general population in particular to further ensure public safety and security as a foundation for development.
Presiding over the Council on August 4, the Minister for Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana, pointed out that Rwanda’s visionary leadership by President Paul Kagame “emphasizes people empowerment,” and called on the force to consider human security as paramount to the citizen’s well-being.
The Minister was flanked by the Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana, DIGPs Dan Munyuza of Operations and Juvenal Marizamunda of Administration and Personnel.
Police takes anti-GBV campaign to Mahama refugee camp
Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on Burundian refugees living in Mahama refugee camp in Kirehe district to play role in the fight against Gender based Violence (GBV) human trafficking and other crimes as means to keep the camp and its neighbourhood safe.
This comes merely two months after RNP launched community policing sensitization campaign in three refugee camps including Mahama refugee camp.
While addressing refugees on August 6, the Eastern Province Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, appealed to them to play active roles in prevention of crimes like Human Trafficking.
Police take fire-fighting drills to Nyaruguru District
As Rwanda National Police (RNP) intensifies public sensitization against fire outbreaks, Nyaruguru District Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vincent Kamanzi, has urged residents to take serious precaution against bush fires incidences.
Kamanzi made call on August 03, as he addressed hundreds of Rusenge Sector residents in Nyaruguru District during a sensitization campaign against fire outbreaks. He reminded them that cases of wild fires tend to go up in the months of July and August.
Police arrest three in connection with bank robbery
Police are holding three people suspected to have stolen US$10,638 (Approx Rwf 7.7 million) from Bank of Kigali (BK) Nyarutarama branch.
The suspects who are currently detained at Remera Police Station are Samuel Minja Kabano an employee of the bank, Jean Marie Vianney Ndagijimana an Intersec Security guard and Mediatrice Ikibasumba a cleaner at the same bank.
The trio were arrested on August 6, following a theft complaint filed to Remera Police Station by BK management. Police hurriedly mounted investigations that led to the arrest of the two men and a woman.

Duo arrested for stealing electric circuit Breakers apparatus
Police in Musanze district has arrested two men, Jean Paul Manirarora and Jean Paul Bizimana, for allegedly stealing two circuit breakers from an electric pole.
The duo, who are currently held at Muhoza Police station had confess to the crime but claims that they were hired although they refused to reveal the identity of the person the allege to have hired them.
A circuit breaker which the two men had disconnected from an electric pole is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and interrupt current flow.
Bugesera residents commend RNP for mediating family disputes
Families in Bugesera had for a long been marred with wrangles are now coming forward praising Rwanda National Police (RNP) for providing sensitization to them in a bid to overcome domestic violence, home neglect, child abuse, gender-based-violence (GBV) and other crimes which emerge from domestic wrangles.
This follows a Community Policing outreach programme conducted by RNP in Bugesera district on August 03, to reach out to families with disputes, in a bid to help them overcome and settle differences before they escalate into crime.
CPCs urged to increase vigilance against crime
Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Rutsiro District have been urged to initiate stronger measures against crime and lawlessness in their neighborhoods.
Speaking during a meeting that drew 461 CPCs, Rutsiro District Police Commander (DPC), Superintendent Jean Baptiste Mutabazi, called on committee meters to sensitize residents about their role in crime prevention.
The meeting was met to discuss measures on how to improve partnership between CPCs and Rwanda National Police (RNP) in combating crime
Caution over illegal mining
The Rwanda National Police (RNP) appeals to the general population to desist and fight illegal mining activities.
The act is both a crime and puts those involved at risk.
The call follows a number of cases where illegal mining activities have turned disastrous and some individuals have been killed by unsupported and weak cliffs in closed or deserted mining sites.
The most recent incident happened on August 4 in Nyanza District where a man died when a cliff of the mining site in Nyagisozi Sector, curved in.
Do not take law in your hands, Muhanga residents urged
Muhanga district residents argued to always report grievances and illegal acts committed against them instead of taking the law in their own hands.
The message was delivered in Muhanga District on August 04, during an interactive meeting between residents, local leaders, police and army officers operating in the district.
During the meeting, it was observed that sometimes residents rush into illegal activities like mob justice, which ends up harming innocent lives – and they were urged to instead work with the police and other law enforcers to apprehend suspect so that they can face justice.
