Weekly review

In the course of last week, Rwanda National Police conducted various activities as it continues to enforce law and order necessary for a crime-free environment.

 Below are some of   the main events that RNP conducted.

 Police Metropolitan building inaugurated in Remera

 RNP inaugurated a new facility in Kigali worth over Rwf1.5 billion which will accommodate Central region police offices as a move to consolidate its services.

 The facility branded 'Kigali Metropolitan Police Headquarters' located in Remera Sector of Gasabo District was officially unveiled on April 21 in an event presided over by the Minister of Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana.

 The occasion was also graced by the Mayor of the City of Kigali, Fidel Ndayisaba, Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana, Amb. Valens Munyabagisha, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Security and other senior officers and local leaders, among others.

 The 25-office block will accommodate offices of the Metropolitan Police Commander (Regional Police Commander-central), Gasabo District Police Unit (DPU) and Remera Police Station, among others.

 Rwanda, US pen deal to support Rwanda National Police in peacekeeping

 Rwanda and the United States of America signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the latter reinforcing the Rwanda National Police peacekeeping capabilities through training that conforms with the latest UN standards and for quick deployment.

 The two-year initial agreement was signed on April 22 between the Minister for Internal Security Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana and Erica J. Barks Ruggle, the US ambassador to Rwanda, who signed on behalf of their respective countries.

 Peacekeeping experts set for training evaluation

 Three officials from the Centre of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU) in Italy were in the country for a pre-deployment training evaluation.

 The team was received and briefed on the Rwanda National Police establishment and peacekeeping journeys at the force's headquarters in Kacyiru, on April 21.

 Lt. Col. Francesco Borretti, the Chief of studies, evaluation and formation at the Italian international training centre, said that in the next five days, they will be involved in planning training activities for the second phase of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) Training of Trainers and a force that will replace the maiden RNP contingent that is currently under deployment under the UN Mission in South Sudan.

 Judicial personnel in Western Province complete training in human rights, criminal investigations

 Judicial police officers and prosecutors operating in the Western Province completed a training to enhance their skills in promoting human rights and criminal investigations.

 The two-day training hosted in Karongi District was conducted by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with the Legal Aid Forum (LAF) and attended by station judicial police officers, station commanders and prosecutors.

 This was the second phase of the training, which is scheduled to be conducted in phases throughout the country.

 Anti-GBV campaign shifts to Southern and Western provinces

 RNP nationwide campaign against gender-based violence (GBV) and child abuse continued in the Southern Province on April 22 and Western Province on April 24 as the force further consolidates strategies to fight and prevent the vices.

 The nationwide campaign which has already reached out to all provinces in the country is aimed at increasing partnership between police and the public in fighting GBV and child abuse, as well as consolidating strategies that exist in overcoming the scourge.

 Recovered vehicle handed to Ugandan authorities

 RNP handed over a stolen Toyota Hilux pickup truck recovered in Rwanda, to Ugandan authorities as the two police forces continue to enjoy strong cooperation against cross-border crimes.

 It was handed over on April 20 by the RNP Commissioner for Interpol, ACP Tony Kuramba, to the Liaison Officer at the Uganda High Comission in Rwanda, Patrick Lawot.

 Speaking to the press shortly after the handover, Police Spokesperson, Chief Supt. Celestin Twahirwa, said that the vehicle was successfully intercepted at the Rubavu border on January 28 as it labored to cross over to DR Congo, from Uganda where it had been stolen.

 Man arrested in Police crackdown on car thieves

 A man identified as Emmanuel Habyarimana was arrested in Kigali in a crackdown on a group of people involved in car theft in the region in which some of the vehicles are sneaked into Rwanda where they are fraudulently given other documents.

 Habyarimana is suspected to be involved in the theft and trafficking of five vehicles from DRC and Burundi and falsifying their legal documents.

 The alleged theft came to light on April 4 when the suspect tried to secure documents for two of the alleged stolen cars.

 Toddler rescued from kidnap

 Rwanda National Police rescued a two year old boy kidnapped from Burundi and sneaked into Rwanda.

 The boy was kidnapped from his parent’s home in Bujumbura apparently by the houseboy identified as Samson Nshimirimana, who connived with a Rwandan man, Anselme Nshimiyimana, who was renting one of the boy's parent's houses.

 The boy was rescued from the two alleged kidnappers on Tuesday evening in a Kigali-bound public vehicle along Huye-Kigali highway.

  The two suspects were also arrested as investigations still underway.
