Rwanda National Police (RNP) deployed two more contingents of 280 officers to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Central Africa (MINUSCA).

The Formed Police Unit (FPU) and a Protection and Support Unit (PSU) composed of 140 officers each left for a one year peacekeeping mission.

The FPU will be specialized in public order management like crowd control, facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance, escort duties and protection of UN facilities, while the PSU will undertake special duties such as protection for VIPs among others.

The two contingents join the third FPU of other 140 officers that left early this month to replace the maiden contingent that also returned home yesterday, after successfully accomplishing its mandate in the central African nation.

The deployment of the two contingents brings the number of RNP peacekeepers in seven UN missions to over 900 (five FPU contingents and Police advisors), with about 30 percent of them being women. Read more

Continental training on cybercrime starts in Kigali

A group of 28 investigators from 10 African countries enrolled in a Cybercrime Investigation Training for the African region in Kigali, which seeks to enhance their capacities in overcoming emerging crimes committed through the use of technology.

 The four-day training that started last Saturday is organized by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with international police – Interpol – and will act as a frontrunner for the forthcoming 84th Interpol Annual General Meeting scheduled for Kigali this November.

Expert trainers were drawn from Trend Micro, a global security software company founded in Los Angeles, California with global headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

Participants are from anti cybercrime units in Rwanda, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Central Africa Republic, Gambia, Gabon, Namibia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Read more

South Korean ambassador visit Rwanda National Police

The South Korean ambassador to Rwanda, Park Yong-min paid a courtesy call to the Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana, on October 20, and commended the professionalism of the officers in ensuring safety and security of people living in Rwanda.

Ambassador Park and the IGP discussed varied policing areas and how to strengthen the existing cooperation .

In an interview, Amb Park the discussions also focused on “possible future cooperation” in areas of training. Read more

Criminal Investigation course students visit Kigali Forensic Laboratory

Forty officers attending the ‘Professional Criminal Investigation’ course at the CID school in Musanze District started their internal tours to link theory with practical investigation techniques.

The students visited Kigali Forensic Laboratory (KFL) on Monday October 19 where they were introduced to steps taken to differentiate between genuine and forged documents, signatures and how to collect finger and footprints from the crime scene.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Modeste Bisangwa, the head of the course, this is a “practical forensic awareness” which is “crucial” for the students. Read more

Police Training School are Inter-unit football tourney champions

The Police Training School (PTS) goalkeeper, Emmanuel Nyandwi was the hero of the day as he saved three spot-kicks in penalty shoot-out to guide the Rwamagana-based school to a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Western region in the finals of the maiden Rwanda National Police inter-unit football tournament.

The Western region brock the deadlock six minutes to the final whistle to boost their hopes of the silverware but their hopes dealt a blow in the dying minutes of the match when PC Sylvain Dukuzumuremyi brought the game back to square after he headed-in a Justin Kamanzi free-kick. Read more

Revenue Protection Unit intercepts Rwf265 million in evaded taxes

The Rwanda National Police’s (RNP) Revenue Protection Unit (RPU) managed to recover about Rwf266 million taxes that otherwise would have been evaded between May and August this year.

The achievement is a result of strong partnership between RPU, the public and Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) through which they collectively conduct operations to fight tax evasion and fraud.

According to RPU report, the unit recovered over Rwf104 million in May, in June it collected Rwf49 million while Rwf59 million and Rwf52 million were recovered in the months of July and August respectively.

The recovered revenues include the public money that otherwise would have been evaded through fraud and smuggling, and fines levied on the offenders. Read more

National anti-GBV campaign goes to Bugesera District

The National anti-Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse campaign that was launched early this month continued on October 23, in Bugesera district where police officers worked with local authorities to mend 21 families that had for long been wrecked by wrangled.

According to the Police, family wrangles sometimes culminate into violence between spouses and effects of such misunderstandings normally stems down to the children. Read more

Drug abuse awareness campaign continues in schools

In an effort to further extend community policing initiatives, Rwanda National Police (RNP) on October 21, continued its anti-narcotics awareness campaign in Bugesera District where officers met with 622 students of Kibenga Primary School and tutored them about effects of drug abuse.

“It’s criminal to use, carry, or sell narcotic substances like cannabis, illicit brew and other drugs. These substances have a health and financial effect to whoever abuses them,” Bugesera District Community Liaison Officers, Assistant Inspector of Police Cyprian Uwitonze, told the students. Read more
