Every week, the Rwanda National Police conducts various activities aimed at further improving safety and security in the country, and support community development. This campaign was no different from in the past week.
IGP Gasana briefs ‘Officer Cadets’ ahead of their graduation
The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana, on February 7 met ‘Officer Cadets’ attending the cadet intake seven at the Police Training School (PTS) in Gishari, Rwamagana District and appreciated their effort the course of the training which led to the successful completion of the course. He reminded them RNP Mission, core values and what is expected of them, the noted that the knowledge acquired gives them enough tools to confront the emerging crimes upfront.
He urged them to always uphold Rwandan spirit and values and challenged them to always have a sense of “self-worth” and spur the country’s transformation, especially in line with security and stability.
IGP Gasana, who disclosed to the students that they will graduate soon noted that they have entered "officer-ship and your obligation includes having knowledge on national security and national interest”
RNP reinforces community policing initiatives
In a bid to reinforce the proactive community policing initiatives, the Rwanda National Police (RNP), handed over two motorcycles and Rwf850, 000, to various players in the campaign against crimes.
The beneficiaries include Rutsiro District Administration Security Support Organ (DASSO), Community Policing Committees in Mushikiri Sector of Kirehe district, who received a motorcycle each.
The CPCs of Kirehe were given the motorcycle as an appreciation for their initiatives, including buying their own motorcycle out of their financial contributions, to facilitate them in their movements and quick response to incidences of crimes.
Imitavu, a cultural troop in Kirehe, whose members are aged between four and ten years, received Rwf600, 000 for composing the best songs meant to promote the concept of community policing and crime prevention in particular. Other beneficiaries include Itorero Twzerane and Indashyikirwa, both cultural troops in Rubavu and Karongi districts respectively. Rutsiro DASSO also received a computer to help them in record keeping.
RNP gears up against counterfeit medicines
A two-day workshop bringing together 25 participants, 10 of them civilians, was conducted at the RNP headquarters with the aim of setting procedures and acquire skills to establish an Anti-counterfeit products and illicit pharmaceuticals unit.
The workshop was facilitated by experts from Interpol
The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Dan Munyuza, while officiating at the opening on February 5, said the unit will combat counterfeits in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and foods, but also extend its expertise in fighting counterfeits of all types, including electronics, pesticides, construction materials and other products.
Uganda deports Rwandan conman
A Rwandan suspected of being a conman and a dealer in fake gold, Murasira Hassan, 31, who fled to Uganda was deported to Rwanda on February 6, where he will be charged for his crimes.
Murasira was escorted by Uganda Police to the Gatuna border where he was handed over to Rwanda National Police and cuffed instantly before being transported to Kigali.
The RNP Police Spokesperson, CSP Celestin Twahirwa revealed that Murasira’s luck run out last month, when he conned a victim in Kigali and ripped him of US$27,000 after selling him fake gold.
RNP hands over recovered cars to Kenyan authorities
Rwanda National Police (RNP), on February 5, handed over two vehicles to Kenyan authorities, which were reported stolen from the capital Nairobi by criminals, who intended to smuggle them to a neighboring country.
They were intercepted just before they completed their journey to a potential market destination in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The cars including a Fuso truck and a Nisan Jeep, were handed over by Commissioner for Interpol, the Assistant Commissioner of Police Tony Kuramba, to Chief Inspector Joe Lele, from Kenya Police Services.
Police recover car smuggled from Britain
Police at the Rusizi border post in the Western Province apprehended a Range Rover Sport V8 that was being smuggled to DRC.
The officers and immigration officers intercepted the driver on February 2, after using an Interpol tool installed at every Rwandan border post, which revealed that the vehicle was on Red Notice after being stolen from the UK.
According to Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police Spokesperson for Western Province, the vehicle had been driven to Rwanda from Burundi by three suspected smugglers identified as Patrick Rurangirwa, Hughes Basabose and Paulin Bizimana, all Burundian nationals, who had sold the car to a Congolese identified as Bisimwa Byaduniya.
Various awareness programmes against crimes among motorists, messages calling for people to respect rules and laws were also delivered in communities and on various media platforms.
RNP considers cooperation as an inevitable tool in policing and the public are considered major allies in crime prevention.
