In the last week of the month of February, Rwanda National Police (RNP) conducted operations and participated in several programs that are geared towards fostering longlasting peace and security in the country. Some of the key highlights that happened are summarised below.
Police continues anti-drug abuse campaigns
Police seized a total of 662 liters of illicit brew and over 10 kilograms of cannabis, in targeted operations countrywide that aim to safeguard the country from these unsafe products. The successful operations were conducted in the districts of Nyagatare, Ruhango, Nyaruguru, Ngoma, Kicukiro and Kayonza on February 25.
The force continuously engages in breaking the supply chain of illegal drugs and illicit brew by mapping-out individuals and groups involved in this crime, which has led to the arrest hundreds of dealers, most of whom have been prosecuted and drugs such as cannabis and illicit brews seized and destroyed.
Police also conducts awareness programmes in communities, on radios and during special occasions like ‘community policing and Police Week’ which have also helped to make the public understand the negative effects of drug abuse.
Police FC marches on in league title race
On Friday 27, a solitary goal from Mwemere Ngirinshuti overcame AS Kigali in the National Football and helped Police FC to edge closer towards the league leaders APR.
Although Police FC played as under dogs against AS Kigali, they managed to dominate and win the game 1-0, which took them to third place behind AS Kigali and league leaders APR.
The win over AS Kigali moved Police into third place, just three points away from second placed AS Kigali and 10 points from first placed APR.
RNP circumcision drive continues in Southern Province
Members of the District Administrative Security Support Organ (DASSO), Community Policing Committees (CPCs) and police officers operating in Nyanza and Huye districts, on Friday 27 benefited from the ongoing Rwanda National Police free circumcision service.
The initiative is aimed at curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS and is conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health and funded by Global Fund – and will run for ten days.
It is also an opportunity to reach out to the youth about the dangers of HIV/ AIDS and consequently urge them to be part of campaigns that fight and prevent HIV/AIDS.
The free male circumcision exercise which is expected to be rolled out to other Districts in the country, started last year in the districts of Rwamagana and Kayonza.
Police intercepts car with 250 liters of illicit brew
On Monday 23 February, Police in Rulindo District impounded a Toyota Carina with Number Plate RAB 196M, which was found loaded with 125 liters of banned brew locally known as "kanyanga" and over 50 sachets of a dangerous liquor brand, Chief Waragi.
The car was intercepted in the morning hours of 23 February in Ntarabana Sector; however, the driver sped off before Police could make a search. Police patrol however followed him, but when he realized that he was being trailed, he abandoned the car and fled.
US official commends RNP's peacekeeping missions
Ambassador Phillip Carter, the Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement (DCME) of United States praised Rwanda's tremendous efforts and commitment to peacekeeping missions for being visible and efficient.
Amb. Carter had led a team of officials from various US agencies to conduct a dialogue in Rwanda on how to reinforce RNP’s peacekeeping capabilities under the United States “Africa Peacekeeping Rapid Response Partnership” initiative.
Kenyan delegation commend RNP gender initiatives
On Tuesday, 24 February, a team of officials from Kenya’s International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSCT) visited RNP headquarters and praised the force's policies' and efforts in gender mainstreaming.
The team composed of Colonel Eric Lusaala, Major Daniel Sitin and Catherine Njeru, a Gender Specialist at IPSTC was in the country for a five-day study tour through which they aimed to learn best practices and propose them for implementation in Kenya.
Niger delegation visit RNP
A delegation from Niger commended RNP for mplementing a strong mechanism to fight against corruption within and outside the force, which enables it to provide quality services to its citizens. The message was delivered by Maman Wada, Secretary General of Transparency International in Niger, on February 24 at the RNP headquarters in Kacyiru.
RNP, University of Rwanda sign MoU
Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the University of Rwanda (UR) on Tuesday 24 entered an agreement for the latter to reinforce the force’s specialized education policing programmes. The Memorandum of Understanding which encompasses all campuses under N UR.
The new partnership will focus mainly on exchange of lecturers, staff and researchers between Police and NUR.
32 Officers complete customer care training
A group of 32 Police officers operating in the Southern Province on Friday completed a five-day training aimed at improving their customer care relations in their daily operations. The training that started on February 23 in Ngoma and is part of RNP'S efforts to upgrade and sharpen skills of officers in the implementation of their daily operations aimed at maintaining law and order.
