Countrywide road safety month kicks off today

Rwanda National Police (RNP) annual traffic month awareness exercise was flagged off on Monday September 7 in a bid to further sensitize road users on road safety standards.

The awareness exercise was, and is still being conducted across the country under the theme “Respect Traffic Rule: Save Lives”.

“The main objective of the 'Traffic Month Campaign' is to enhance the knowledge of road users in traffic rules and regulations with a view to prevent accidents and dangers of violation of traffic rules," Commissioner of Police (CP) George Rumanzi, Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety department at RNP, said.  Six Schools tutored on traffic rules

In a continued effort to reach out to the entire country, Rwanda National Police (RNP) on September 11 took the 2015 Road Safety awareness activities to six secondary schools in Gakenke, Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge districts.

During the campaign, Police equipped students with knowledge about traffic rules and regulations.

The students who benefited from the campaign are from Lycée Catholique Saint Alain de Mataba in Gakenke, Gicaca Primary school in Gasabo District while in Kicukiro and Gasabo Districts the students from Saint Patrick and ESA Nyarugunga benefited from police lessons. Read more

170 Police officers set off for South Sudan mission

At approximately 8:40am on Thursday, a plane carrying 170 Rwanda National Police officers left Kigali international Airport as the officers set off for a one year United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The Rwanda Formed Police Unit (RWAFPU-1) includes 37 females.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, DCGP Dan Munyuza saluted off the officers.

The contingent is headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rogers Rutikanga and deputized by CSP Dan Ndayambaje. They will be stationed and operating in Malakal County, northern part of the capital, Juba. Read more

UN decorates Rwandan Police officers for South Sudan mission

Twenty eight Rwanda National Police (RNP) officers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been awarded UN service Medals for their excellent and professional peacekeeping duties.

The awarded officers, who serve as Individual Police Officers (IPOs), include seven females. IPOs act as trainers, mentors and advisers, among others.

The awarding ceremony was held in Juba Thong Ping Camp, on September 9 and presided over by the Deputy Special Representative of UN Secretary General (D/SRSG) Moustapha Soumare. Read more

District Police Units begin leadership retreat

Rwanda National Police (RNP) began a leadership Workshop for district Police Commanders, District and provincial judicial officers aimed at refining their professional leadership skills in their daily work. The three-day workshop was launched on September 12 at the Police Training School (PTS), Gishari, by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana.

The IGP was accompanied by DIGP in charge of administration and personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda and Commissioners from RNP HQs.

The lectures were delivered by Commissioners from different RNP departments, who brought a unique understanding of the law enforcement culture and practical knowledge of how to overcome the challenges law enforcement leaders face in their operational settings. Read more

Police busts notorious gangs of buglers

In a well planned operation, Police have arrested 20 notorious buglers who for long had terrorized some city suburbs with late night theft of electronics.

The suspects were paraded yesterday, September 10, at Kigali Metropolitan Police where police returned some of the recovered items to the owners.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege, the Commissioner for CID, requested anyone one who may have lost their equipment to come to police with proof of ownership.

“We recently established a special unit that would deal with increasing cases of burglary. The specialized unit that works day and night responding to call about house break-ins, investigated all cases in-depth and apprehended heads of several gangs that had terrorized some neighbourhoods with theft,” said Badege. Police follows up on reconciled families as they recover

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has been strongly involved in reconciling families that are embroiled in wrangles in order to foster community peace, safety and security.

Over the last couple of days, police officers in Nyaruguru District revisited over 30 couples that were reconciled six months ago.

This was meant to evaluate if they are now living happily together as per the resolutions that they agreed to respect.

During this operation conducted on September 8, the well trained officers visited families where they discovered that the couples are now flourishing and living in harmony. Read more
