RNP, Interpol meet over counterfeits, pharmaceutical crimes
Training and advancing skills of Police officers is critical to effectively address prevailing incidences of illicit pharmaceuticals and counterfeit products.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda made the remarks at the opening of a four-day workshop on anti-counterfeit and pharmaceutical crimes, which started in Kigali yesterday..
The meeting organised by Rwanda National Police in partnership with the international police organisation, Interpol, brought together 30 police officers attached to the RNP 'Anti-Counterfeit and Illegal Pharmaceutical Unit' along with other partners from the ministries of, Health, Agriculture, Trade and Industry, Rwanda Revenue Authority, Rwanda Standards Bureau, and National Pharmacy Council, among others.
Police officers complete training on countering counterfeits, pharmaceutical crimes
Thirty Rwanda National Police officers on Friday concluded four-day training on anti-counterfeit and pharmaceutical crimes .
Participants were drawn from the newly created ant- graft unit – Anti-Counterfeit and Illegal Pharmaceutical Unit – that operate under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the ministries of, Health, Agriculture, Trade and Industry, Rwanda Revenue Authority, Rwanda Standards Bureau, and National Pharmacy Council, among others.
MINUSTAH chief welcomes Rwandan police contingent in Haiti
The Police Commissioner for the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Serge Therriault, has welcomed the sixth contingent of Rwandan Police peacekeepers (RWA FPU) ahead of their operations in the Caribbean nation.
Thierriault officially met the contingent on July 23 – and during his visit – he commended the government of Rwanda for its commitment to international peace through the deployment of peacekeepers to UN missions.
He was accompanied by Fiona Drennan from UN’s Mission Management and Support Section, and the function was held at RWA FPU Headquarters in Jeremie Town located in the province of Grande Anse.
Kenya gender promotion activists commend RNP’s Isange One stop Centre
A ten-man delegation from the Africa UNiTE Kenya, visited Isange One stop Centre situated at the Police Hospital in Kacyiru, and commended the achievements registered by the centre in responding to Gender Based Violence (GBV) issues.
The delegation composed of officials from Gender Commission, civil society, and UN women, is in the country for a five-day study tour aimed at learning from the Rwanda’s approaches and initiatives to address GBV.
The Africa UNiTE Kenya raises public awareness, stimulate behavior change, coordination for prevention activities and increase political will and resources to respond to national issues related to prevention of violence against women and girls; promotion of justice and ending impunity; and provision of services to survivors of violence.
IGP Gasana challenges private security operators on professionalism
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, has called on private security companies to adopt standard operating procedures as well as maintain high levels of professionalism as they conduct their security duties.
IGP Gasana made the remarks on July 24, during a meeting with representatives of 19 local private security firms operating in the country, at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Headquarters in Kacyiru.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, DCGP Dan Munyuza.
Police equips 120 park rangers with community policing skills
Rwanda National Police has urged National Park rangers to look beyond protecting their respective reserves and also assume a public watchdog responsibility by contributing to fighting crimes like drug trafficking and abuse.
While addressing about 120 park rangers who are undertaking a civic education course at Police Training School in Gishari, on Thursday, the Director of Civic Education, a unit under Community Policing Department, Senior Superintendent Teddy Ruyenzi, reminded the rangers that besides keeping the parks safe, they also have to ensure that the neighborhoods are equally safe.
RNP, Ngororero residents discuss Crime Prevention strategies
In a bid to further raise awareness against crimes, Rwanda National Police (RNP) on Sunday, conducted a community policing sensitization campaign in Ngororero District where over 2000 citizens were equipped with knowledge on prevention and fighting crimes.
The event which was held in Nyange Cell of Ngororero sector, preceded a friendly football match between RNP and Ngororero commercial motorcyclists.
During a townhall anti crime meeting, residents were sensitized on fighting crimes like Gender Based Violence (GBV), drug abuse, human trafficking and introduce them to preventive measures.
The meeting was also attended by 50 members of COTEMO, a motorcyclists’ cooperative operating in Ngororero District.
Large Chunk of illicit drugs destroyed in Kirehe
Large chunk of narcotics and illicit alcohol have been destroyed in Kirehe District following separate successful anti-drugs operation conducted in the district since January this year.
The public destruction was held on July 22 in Musaza Sector in presence of hundreds of local residents, local leaders and security personnel and representative from prosecution. It was also attended by the young engaged in anti-crime programmes, cyclists and motorcyclists.
The destroyed drugs included 1.6 tonnes of cannabis and over 183 litres of Kanyanga, a banned gin.
REG employee arrested over bribery
Two people including an employee of Rwanda Energy Group (REG) have been arrested following a failed attempt to sell cash power meters illegally through soliciting bribes.
Damascene Nsabimana, 35, a technician at REG, was arrested in Kicukiro District, Kigarama Sector, while in the process of acquiring a bribe worth Rwf155, 000 from a client who had asked for a new cash power meter.
Self-proclaimed traditional healers arrested for torturing 17-year old boy
Rwanda National Police on Wednesday assembled a group of eight people accused of using witchcraft and brutally torturing a 17 year old mentally ill boy.
The lead suspect, Julienne Mukashema, who also claims to be a traditional healer, argued that she met the victim on the streets and took him to her house in Kacyiru Sector of Gasabo District where she apparently had a shrine, after learning that he had mental illness.
When Police arrived at Mukashema’s house in Kabizi Cell on Tuesday night at 09:30pm, they found the victim chained outside the house.
The victim had his hands tied behind his back with a metallic chain locked with a padlock and his waist strapped on a slab to keep him on the ground.
Duo arrested over job interview malpractice
A consultant with the Rwanda Association of Local Government Authorities (RALGA) has been arrested in connection with job interview related malpractices.
Elisaphan Mujyanama, 32, was arrested last week after it came to light that he was trying to meddle in a job tests, apparently to influence results in favour of one of the candidates.
Mujyanama, a teacher by profession, was arrested alongside one of the job applicants identified as John Ntaganda, 34, whom he had allegedly aided to cheat the exams.
