Weekly News Review

The second week of August 2015 is ending on a high note, Rwanda National Police conducted several notable activities that were geared towards enforcing law and order, and as we enter a third week of August, we bring you a recap of major activities that marked the second week on August.

 Kaboneka, IGP urges DASSO to uphold discipline

 The Minister of Local Government, Francis Kaboneka, told members of District Administration Security Support Organ (DASSO) to always maintain a high level of discipline and ensure provision of high quality security services to the public as expected of them.

 Kaboneka made the remarks while addressing over one hundred DASSO personnel and officials in charge of good governance at provincial and district level during a meeting in Kigali held on Tuesday August 11.

 “You cannot earn the trust of citizens if you are indiscipline, violent or corrupt. You are required to be disciplined at all times and tackle societal challenges with confidence and professionalism,” Kaboneka told the DASSOs.

 “You should not tolerate colleagues who are disrespectful to the public, or tolerates indiscipline such as drunkenness because they taint an ugly image to the institution,” he said…..Read More….

 RNP in a sensitisation drive to promote environmental friendly mining

Rwanda National Police has started a sensitization drive to encourage mining companies operating in the country to undertake their operations in an environmentally sustainable way.

The drive that started in Kamonyi District, Rukoma Sector, was attended by associations and cooperatives of miners, and members of the Private Sector dealing in mining.

Speaking during the event, Inspector of Police Robert Komire, the in charge of environment and disaster at Rwanda National Police said, “it is necessary that mining operations operate in an environment-friendly manner to ensure sustainable development, which he considers as important as economic and social development.” Read More….

Police intercepts more narcotic drugs

The Rwanda National Police (RNP), seized narcotics and illicit alcohol in operations conducted over the weekend in different places of the country.

The seized narcotics and illicit brew include 159 packs blue sky of which one pack has 12 pieces, 600 sachets of cannabis and 11 liters of illicit brew commonly known as Kanyanga. They were intercepted in Nyabihu, Burera and Kamonyi districts respectively.

The Western Province Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Théobald Kanamugire, urged residents to abstain from engaging in drug dealing and warned that whoever engages themselves in such dealing will be punished. Read More….

Motorists and cyclists urged to respect traffic laws

Western Regional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Bértin Mutezinatare, has called on motorcyclist and cyclists in the area to be more responsible on the roads by respecting traffic rules in order to prevent avoidable accidents.

Mutezinatare made the call on August 7, during discussions with over 230 commercial motorcyclists and cyclists in the region.

The meeting that also attracted local leaders, police officers and partners in crime prevention operating in the western region, was conducted as part of Rwanda National Police (RNP) sensitization campaigns aimed at fostering traffic safety. Read More…

Suspected poacher arrested with leopard skin

Police in Nyabihu District have arrested a man suspected of belonging to a gang of poachers.

The suspect, Emmanuel Maniriho, was arrested on Saturday in possession of a leopard skin. Police based on reliable information about poaching which aided preliminary investigations into poaching cases.

Advance citizen participation in crime prevention – CPCs told

Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Burera District have been urged to advance citizen participation in order to proactively address immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime.

Speaking during a meeting that attracted local leaders, police officers and over 80 CPCs on August 10, the District Community Liaison Officer of Burera, Inspector of Police (IP) Justin Kajeje, said that CPCs should promote the philosophy that promotes organizational strategies in their communities, in order to support the systematic use of partnerships to solve security challenges. Suicide prevention is crucial in community safety, police appeals

Rwanda National Police (RNP) is calling on community residents to keep an eye on any individuals who may appear to be suicidal and alert police or local authorities to provide necessary help.

RNP notes that when authorities are informed in time, it helps to place individuals on suicide watch when it is believed that they exhibit warning signs indicating that they may be at risk of committing bodily harm or fatal self injury.

Police in collaboration with local authorities are always ready to help and resolve and dispute or family conflict to overt any cause for such desperate mentality and behaviors. Read More…

Road users sensitised against accidents

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on road users in Gashore Sector of Bugesera District particularly commercial motorcyclists to take the lead in prevention of accidents.

Records indicate that motorcyclists constituted the highest percentage of people involved in accidents in Bugesera District.

During their meeting with the Police, they were urged to uphold traffic rules to ensure efficient and effective prevention of road accidents. Read More…

Kamonyi residents vows to stamp out drug abuse

Residents of Kamonyi District have been agreed to mount a campaign and fight against use and sell of narcotics and illicit drugs by providing timely information to Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other law enforcing agencies.

They made the declaration on August 12, during a sensitization campaign initiated by RNP in Bibungo Sector, Kamonyi District, which attracted over 100 residents, local leaders and RNP’s partners in crime prevention. Read More…

Bugesera traders advised to set up fight against drug abuse

Police has urged traders in Ririma sector of Bugesera district to stand up against drug abuse by mainly sharing credible information about suspected drug traffickers and using drugs so as they are apprehended and brought to book.

While addressing traders on Tuesday August 11 Bugesera District Community Policing Liaison Officer (DCLO), Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Cyprien Uwitonze, told them that fighting against drugs is a shared responsibility and they should as well play a significant role in the quest. Read More…
