We can keep our roads safer – RPC West

Over one thousand public transport operators in the Western Province have been urged to abide by traffic rules and regulations as well as cooperate with the police in ensuring safety on the roads and public safety generally.

The call was made yesterday by the Regional Police Commander (RPC) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Karasi during a meeting held in Rubavu District here he also urged them to fully participate in the country’s security and development activities.

Those that attended the meeting include d representatives of bus drivers’ cooperatives and its members, commercial motorcyclists and cyclists operating in the province on

The RPC advised them that, as they conduct their businesses, security should be part and parcel of their responsibilities.

“Transportation is one of the sectors on the countries development agenda but it should equally be a source of information on anyone that would want to draw a hitch in the course of development and people’s social wellbeing,” ACP Karasi said.

The meeting was also attended by several local leaders and police officers operating in the region.

He challenged them to be vigilant and watch out against suspected criminals who may seek their transportation services to commission crime and or transport stolen materials.

“You will be charged as accomplices to committing crime if this is not communicated to security organs” he warned.

He appealed to them to always respect road traffic regulations, especially motorcyclists and cyclists to always wearing protective gears including head helmets and reflector jackets as well as to not overload.

The transporters vowed to enhance their discipline and to closely share information with the police whenever they suspect a crime.
