Smuggling is harmful to the economy. It bring into market substandard products, which pose threat on people’s health. It undermines the local industry, discourages legal imports and reduces the volume of revenues collected from duties and levies by the state.
Rwanda National Police (RNP) therefore warns of severe consequences to anyone that will be caught in this illegal business.
On Thursday, the Rapid Response Department (RPD) arrested a man in Rubavu District for allegedly smuggling clothes into the country, through illegal borders.
RPD is a Police unit attached to Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) to curb on illegal trade.
The suspect was found in possession of 24 pieces of cloth – kitenge – at the time of his arrest.
“The business community should therefore understand that besides being unlawful, smuggling is most likely to hurt their business since the act includes imprisonment, confiscation of the goods found with and a fine of up to ten times the value of seized goods.”
