The Deputy Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Rwanda, Geeta Rao Gupta visited the Rwanda National Police anti-gender violence medical wing, Isange One Stop Centre, on May 6 and commended the centre for the “exceptional services” in responding to challenges affecting women and children.
The centre situated at the Kacyiru Police Hospital was officially inaugurated in 2010 by the First Lady, Jeannette Kagame to support victims of gender and domestic violence and child abuse acquire free medical, legal and psycho-socio services.
“One stop centre is a commendable model for addressing issues of violence against children and women. I hope it gets replicated all over Rwanda,” Geeta said.
Isange established with the support of Imbuto Foundation and UNICEF has so far received about 7, 000 patients, most majority victims of domestic violence.
The First Lady recently launched the scale-up of the centre to all hospitals across the country.
“This is an exceptional work and it’s good to see what the Rwanda Police is doing to address issues affecting women and children acquire necessary holistic care,” Geeta added.
At Isange, she toured various units including the psycho-socio, counseling and the children wings.
Chief Inspector of Police Shafiga Murebwayire, Director of Isange explained that the centre works with the Ministries of Health and Justice on medical and legal services respectively.
CIP Shafiga added that most of the victims come by their own due to awareness and that others are brought by officers at Police stations, where they report their cases.
