Uganda University students borrow a leaf from RNP- Community Policing

Over 50 members of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA), have this Friday 19, visited Rwanda National Police to learn from the Force’s crime prevention strategies especially  community policing. The delegation comes from different Universities of Uganda both public and private.

The students are in the country for a three day study tour. They also visited Isange One Stop Centre,  at the Police Hospital, Kigali Genocide Memorial Site, Kimironko Community Policing activities and the Ministry of East African Community.

Their visit at the Police headquarters, aims at learning from the country’s history and its different systems and policies put in place by government especially community policing. The Head of delegation, Hassan Abubakar Matanda reiterated that best practices they learnt from the Rwandan community policing initiatives could be adopted back home.

While at Kimironko Sector, the visiting Uganda University Students were briefed by the Executive Secretary Niragire Theophile and Bugingo Josephat, one of the members of the Community policing Committees on their role and how they partner with security organs especially the police in preventing and fighting crimes.

While at the Police Headquarters, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), CG Emmanuel K. Gasana explained to the students the great role played by members of the general public in crime prevention campaign. He over emphasized the need for the youth to be involved in all socio-economic activities that promote people's welfare.

He challenged the visiting delegation to partner with youth in Rwanda through mainly sharing best practices to enhance development of both countries.

ACP Damas Gatare, the Commissioner for Public Relations and Community Policing briefed the students on RNP’s involvement in human security activities that are aimed at poverty alleviation such as Umuganda or community work, Gira Inka Munyarwanda which is loosely translated as One Cow per Poor Family program, eradication of grass thatched houses (nyakatsi), the medical insurance program and environmental activities that include tree planting initiative among others.

Hassan Abubakar Matanda, the head of the delegation, commended RNP's tremendous achievements in crime prevention through its Community Policing programs.

Matanda said the skills they acquired from RNP will be used to sensitize the youth in Uganda to ensure the (youth) realize the need to partner with security organs so as to be agents of socio-economic transformation.
