Separate Police operations aimed at breaking chains of drug suppliers arrested two people, who were at the time trafficking varied quantities of cannabis.
They were arrested in Gakenke and Gasabo districts.
One of the suspects, Aboubakar Ntacyobazimaza, 29, was arrested in Rusagara of Gakenke with about 6000 pellets of cannabis.
One Gaston Mutabaruka was arrested on November 19, in Rusororo sector of Gasabo District with 360 rolls of cannabis.
Meanwhile, Police in Rubavu district is searching for one Eric Ndayishimiye, 23, another suspected drug dealer after about 6200 pellets of cannabis were recovered in his toilet.
Police spokesperson for the Western Province, Inspector of police (IP) Eulade Gakwaya, said,
“Residents like in other parts of the country, have facilitated the police to identify individuals and groups that traffics narcotic drugs into the country, routes used, and Mutabaruka was one of those on the list and wanted,” IP Gakwaya said.
He commended members of the public and urged them to continue the partnership by reporting drug leaders to police.
Article 594 of the penal code stipulates in its second paragraph that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five year years and a fine of up to Rwf5 million.
