Jean Bosco Mbarushimana, 36, and Francois Ndayisaba, 34, both commercial motorcyclists were arrested separately on November 16 in Gakenke and Gisagara districts, respectively, on charges of bribery.
The suspects had earlier been caught in traffic related offences are their motorcycles impounded.
Mbarushimana’s arrest came after he wired a bribe of Rwf10, 000 to the mobile money account of the officer handling the case.
Meanwhile, Ndayisaba was caught red-handed attempting to give a bribe of Rwf20, 000.
“The motorcycle Ndayisaba was riding lacked insurance, and as a norm, it had to be impounded. Ndayisaba tried to offer a bribe of Rwf20, 000, and he was arrested there. It’s the similar case with Mbarushimana,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kabanda, the spokesperson for the traffic and road safety department, said.
CIP Kabanda urged members of the public and drivers in particular to desist from such malpractices which are criminal in nature.
He commended the officers for denouncing bribery and for acting fast to arrest the suspects, which is a move in the right direction to weed out corruption and bribery tendencies in particular.
Penalties for anyone convicted of corruption range from two to seven years in jail and a fine of up to ten times the value of illegal benefit demanded, or both charges, according to article 641 of the Rwandan Penal Code.
