Two Men in Kayonza arrested for attempting to bribe officers

Two men in Kayonza District have been arrested for attempting to lure a police officer into releasing three  suspects with a bribe worth Rwf200, 000.

Despite continued sensitization calls made by Rwanda National Police (RNP) against bribery and corruption, the two suspects, Silas Mugiraneza and Josiane Mukatetero stealthily approached the officer and asked him to release the three individuals, who had been previously arrested for illicit drug related crimes.

Police Spokesperson for Eastern Province, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, said that the officer immediately reported the matter to his superiors and the suspects were immediately arrested in action.

“The two suspects called the officer and asked him to meet so that they discuss about something important. But when he approached them, they offered him Rwf200,000 and told him that they wanted the three individuals in question to be released, but they were immediately arrested since the officer had already reported the illegal act," IP Kayigi said.

“Their arrest should not come as a surprise because RNP officers are expected to be professional and disciplined as they endeavor to carry out their duties. It is through such discipline that the public will continue to trust us with their safety and security.”

He called upon Rwandans to desist from such acts of corruption and bribery, reminding them that Police maintains a zero stance on such tendencies.

He also reminded the general public to desist from illegal activities and to partner with Police through Community Policing, by providing timely information on any suspicious activities that may hamper security in society.

Article 641 of the penal code states that any person who offers or proposes a gift or any other illegal benefit to a person in charge of a service, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment between five and seven years and a fine twice to ten times the value of the illegal benefit he or she offered or promised.
