Two house-helps arrested over theft of Rwf2 million

Two house-helps have been arrested in Kigali in connection with stealing Rwf2.5 million from their employer.

Anicet Ngirimana, 26, and Esther Tumukunde allegedly stole the money from one Guido Murenzi, their employer, in Kacyiru Sector of Gasabo District on September 26.

Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu said that only Rwf1, 862,500 was recovered from the suspects at the time of their arrest.

“On September 26, the two suspects sneaked into the bedroom of their employer, stole the money and escaped,” said Supt. Hitayezu.

“After Murenzi reported the theft to police, investigation were initiated, which led to the arrest of Tumukunde first on September 27, in Nyamirambo, who also led us to Ngirimana in Gatsata later in the day where he was also arrested,” he added.

“Tumukunde was at the time buying expensive things when someone, who knew her, saw her and got suspicious where she got all that money, and reported her to Rwezamenyo Police station, and she was arrested shortly after and led officers to her accomplice.”

The duo had already used part of the money to buy salon items, apparently to start a salon business.

The spokesperson commended the vigilance and bravery of the person, whose instincts facilitated the arrest of the suspects.

Article 300 of the penal code provides a prison sentence of between six months and two years, and a fine of two to five times the value of what was stolen.
