Two suspected drug traffickers have been arrested in separate operations conducted in Nyamasheke and Kirehe districts.
One of the suspects; Celestin Hatangimana, 27, a motorcyclist, was arrested in Rugali Cell of Macuba Sector in Nyamasheke District with two sacks of cannabis.
“Hatangimana was intercepted at about 10pm on Monday carrying the two sacks of cannabis on a motorcycle RD 476X, which was also impounded to Ruharambuga Police station where the suspect is also detained,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said.
“His arrest was based on a tip-off from residents; there was also information that Hatangimana was either a drug dealer or working with drug dealers to transport their substances,” he added.
In a related incident, Nzabonariba Bukuru, 46, was arrested in Kirehe District with quantities of cannabis.
“Nzabonariba was at the time trafficking cannabis from the neighbouring Tanzania when he was arrested on September 3 at about 6pm in Kiravunga Village, Kigarama Cell of Kigarama Sector,” CIP Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.
Fighting drug trafficking and abuse is among the major priorities of Rwanda National Police (RNP). An ongoing national campaign against drugs is dedicated to educating especially the young people on dangers of abusing drugs, prevent new users and join efforts to break chains of supply.
