Two drug traffickers arrested in Gakenke

Police in Gakenke District have arrested two suspected drug traffickers, who were at the time found with at least 20 dozens of assorted contrabands and cannabis.

Police spokesperson for the Northern region, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira identified the suspects as Celestin Ntahonsigaye, 32, and Vincent Uwimana, 30.

“The two suspects were arrested on July 3 in Mucaca of Nemba Sectoe as they trafficked into the country 20 litres of Kanyanga, 2kgs of cannabis and 20 dozens of Sky Gin,” IP Gasasira said.

They were also caught with two bundles of second hand clothes.

More than 80 tonnes of smuggled second hand clothes have been seized in the last four months.

“In almost every successful operation, there is involvement of citizens. That's the same community policing spirit through which we received information on the criminal and unlawful deeds of the duo, ” the spokesperson said.

The suspects are currently detained at Gakenke police station.

Article 594 of the penal code specifies an imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of up to Rwf5 million to whoever is convicted of drug-related crimes.

On the other hand, article 200 of the law establishing Value Added Tax, stipulates that any person with uncustomed goods shall be liable to an imprisonment not exceeding five years or a fine of 50 percent of the dutiable value of the goods involved, or both.
