Police in Kayonza District are holding two people for allegedly trading in minerals illegally.

Police identified the suspects as Sixbert Ngabonziza and Rashidi Gatabazi who were arrested Rwinkwavu sector, Nkondo cell.
 
Chief Inspector of Police Hamdum Twizeyiman the eastern region police spokesperson, said the duo were intercepted in Rwinkwavu village carrying about six kilograms of cassiterite mineral

"There was information that Twizeyimana and Ngabonziza possessed minerals from Rwinkwavu mines. Police mounted a search and intercepted the two suspects in Nkondo cell where the minerals were also seized,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Twizeyimana

Transportation of minerals outside mining licensed areas (concessions and permits perimeters) is also allowed only when the consignment shows the source mine, its value and when it has the right tag.

Article 1 of the Ministerial Regulations No 001/Minifom/2011 relating to fighting smuggling in mineral trading stipulates that nobody is allowed to purchase or sell minerals without commercial registration.

Meanwhile, authorities in Rusizi District have impounded 30 bales of secondhand clothes smuggled into the country.

The bales were seized by security personal during a regular security patrol in Mururu sector Gahinga cell.

Police said the owner of the illegal merchandise identified as Jean-Paul Kazugu immediate fled.

The goods have been handed over to the Rwanda revenue authority revenue protection and investigations department and may be auctioned to recover government taxes.

A kilogram of used clothes and shoes pays $ 4 in taxes. One bale weighs about 45 kilograms.
