Two arrested over attempted bribery

Two people including a driver were arrested separately on Saturday in connection with attempting to bribe police officers, barely a week after eight other drivers were apprehended in an ongoing Rwanda National Police crackdown against corruption.

The driver identified as Pierre Reberaho was arrested along Bugesera-Kigali highway while the other person identified as Clemantine Iribagiza was arrested in of Nyanza district.

Reberaho was apprehended after he tried to bribe a police officer, who had penalized him for violating traffic rules.

Iribagiza on the other hand is said to have tried to bribe the commander of Busasamana Police station in Nyanza with Rwf20, 000 to release her husband, who had been arrested over other offences.

Supt. Victor Vandama, Bugesera District Police Commander also said Reberaho, who was driving a Toyota Corolla registration number RAC 868M tried to offer the officer Rwf10, 000 after stopping him for over speeding.

Over speeding is said to be among major causes of road accidents.

Supt. Vandama said since April, ten people have been arrested in Bugesera in connection with bribery attempt, eight of them drivers.

He cautioned road users, especially drivers of such malpractices and warned of severe consequences to anyone who will be caught in such bribery tendencies.

“Police officers are aware of the ill-effects associated with corruption and fighting it is among their day-to-day duties,” Supt. Vandama said.

Fighting corruption is among the Rwanda National Police priorities.

Penalties for anyone convicted of corruption range between two and seven years and a fine of up to ten times the value of illegal benefit demanded as stipulated under articles 633 to 651 of the Rwanda penal code.
