Police in Rwamagana District has arrested two men in connection with distillation of a local brew commonly known as Kanyanga.
The suspects, Alexandre Habiyakare and Innocent Nsengiyumva, were nabbed on the evening of August 02, while distilling the illegal brew in Bicaca Cell of Karenge Sector during a targeted operation.
Police also seized about 46 liters of kanyanga that the suspects had distilled. The operation by police was based on information about the suspects’ illegal business. They are currently detained at Karenge Police Station. Shortly after their arrest, the suspects confessed to the crime.
According to Eastern Province Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, “Police will continue its operations against illicit brew and narcotics and ensure that the distillation, trade and consumption in society are stopped. There is a clear correlation between these illegal substances and criminality; so it is our mandate to ensure that we protect society against such,” he said.
“We are grateful to responsible members of society who provide us with timely alerts about criminal activities, which have enabled successful operations against illicit brew distillers. Through this strong partnership, our combined efforts will safeguard our communities and protect especially the young people against these dangerous substances.”
Article 594 of the Rwandan Penal Code stipulates that any person who, unlawfully, makes, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine between Rwf500,000 to Rwf5million.
