Two people were apprehended in Nyagatare and Gatsibo districts on Friday in connection with trafficking and selling illegal gin called chief waragi and kanyanga.

The suspects are identified as John Bosco Rwandanga of Kayombe sector in Nyagatare who was found in possession of 60 litres of kanyanga and Peter Muvara of Rwimbogo in Gatsibo who had 18 sachets of chief waragi.

They are currently detained at Karama and Kabarole police stations respectively.

Police in the Eastern Province said fighting drug abuse, which is on tremendous decrease, is among their priorities and warned all those that could be involved in drug-related crimes.

The Rwanda National Police also appeals to anyone that has information on people involved in drug dealings to share it with security organs in their localities.

Drug abuse, which is rated high among the youth, is said to be a major cause of other crimes like theft, assault, gender and domestic violence and atrributes to school drop outs and unwanted pregnancy.
