TURINDANE: Police urge drivers on shared responsibility to keep road users safe

On Friday, October 24, Rwanda National Police (RNP) extended Gerayo Amahoro road safety awareness campaign to over 150 drivers at Nyabugogo bus station, emphasizing shared road responsibility under the theme "Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro" loosely translated as"let’s protect one another and arrive safely.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Boniface Rutikanga, the RNP Spokesperson, told the drivers that Gerayo Amahoro remains active, and the Turindane initiative continues to strengthen road safety awareness and promote a culture of shared responsibility among all road users.

“Gerayo Amahoro has not stopped; rather, the Turindane campaign aims to remind all road users that road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” ACP Rutikanga said.

He urged all categories of road users to be considerate and mindful of one another.

“Let’s protect one another — drivers should give way to pedestrians, motorcyclists should do the same, and pedestrians must also behave responsibly on the road so that everyone reaches their destination safely,” he added.

ACP Rutikanga further reminded drivers to respect traffic laws and road signs to prevent accidents and safeguard lives, emphasizing that road safety should not depend solely on police presence or observed by law but rather a culture.

He also called owners and managers of transport agencies to take responsibility for ensuring that drivers are sober to operate vehicles.

“If a driver is tired, giving them a vehicle to operate endangers the lives of passengers and other road users. Under the Turindane campaign, you can also inform us about transport agencies that are not complying, so that we can engage and train them to correct their life-threatening decisions,” he explained.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the spokesperson for the RNP Traffic and Road Safety Department, highlighted the importance of vehicle inspection, driver alertness, and strict adherence to traffic rules.

“You must always prioritize safety over haste. Respect traffic signs, ensure your vehicles are in good mechanical condition, and avoid distractions like using a phone while driving,” SP Kayigi advised.

The Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro campaign, under the broader Gerayo Amahoro initiative, continues to engage various road users across the country, reinforcing the message that road safety is a collective responsibility to ensure that every journey ends safely.
