Police have urged students of Tumba College of Technology in Rulindo District to actively take part in raising awareness to fight and preventing crimes, with emphasis on high impact crimes like drug abuse and trafficking in human being.
District Police Commander (DPC) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Felix Bizimana made the call on March 10 while meeting with about 300 students at their campus.
The meeting was aimed at enlightening them on the security situation and their role as the youth to fight crimes that most especially target or affect their generation.
SSP Bizimana reminded the students to “actively play their roles as agents of change.”
He reminded students and the administration to enhance the existing partnership, form anti-crime clubs to spearhead the awareness programmes within the school to decisively campaign against drug abuse and the imaging threat of modern day slavery.
“It is through such partnership that we have been able to seize big quantities of cannabis and illicit brew, many dealers apprehended based on the information provided and attempts to lure young people in human trafficking foiled,” he said.
The DPC went on to inform students that they are the future of the country and urged them to spearhead and influence their peers to lead the fight against crimes.
In reaction, students formed an anti-crime club and vowed to hold the awareness flag both in the college and in their communities.
Ignace Turatsinze, one of the students said they will also use the club to reach out to their peers in other schools to bring them on board in this noble course.
“We now have a clear understanding of crimes related to drug abuse and what we can do to fight them,” Turatsinze, who was also elected to head the anti-crime club, said.
